Stuff that no one really cares about

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

First off, I changed the system font from Gill Sans to Myriad. Lovely.

It’s too bad that I’m not going to be able to be here for Hosanna on Friday. I’m sure it will be positively smashing, if only because of the Super Mario World (SNES) music and Andy Hunter Life. Fits right in.

I need a name for my bass. I had a few ideas. Like Zeromus, because the Black Mages’ version of it is so amazing. But, I haven’t played FFIV, so I don’t feel I should use it. Zeromus is the final boss in FFIV, by the way. Then I had a crazy idea to look at Vivi’s (FFIX) staves and choose a powerful one, but all of the names suck. Octagon Rod? No thanks. And wonderful names, Square. Ideas?

DeCSS

I realize that there are many who don’t understand how I can hold my unique views about filesharing, music, and software. I’ve already posted about copyright law and how downloading is quite fair use and about free culture. Now, let’s look at the law again.

This time, it’s the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. You may be wondering what the DMCA has to do with anything. I mean, it’s an American law that says you can’t circumvent any digital protections or locks, like those found in Windows Media. Well, it has a lot to do with Linux, really.

In fact, many Linux distributions are illegal. (more…)

Voluntary Collective Licensing

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

A new ISP from the UK called PlayLouder has a deal with Sony-BMG to allow any of their customers to share any Sony-BMG music with other PlayLouder customers. According to BoingBoing, this is what’s called voluntary collective licensing by the EFF, who is fighting for the filesharing in the United States. The prices for DSL service from PlayLouder is around the same price as other providers. (more…)

Twinkin’ Out

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

According to UrbanDictionary, twinking in RPGs is the act of giving low level characters impossibly good equipment that they could not have obtained on their own. For instance, a freshly made Amazon and somehow giving her a Windforce Hydra Bow. That has nothing to do with what I actually did: change around the look of my desktop. (more…)

Viva

Viva - York Region Rapid Transit SystemThis Viva thing makes the TTC look like a joke. Honestly. Ticket machines at every bus stop? The power to change the traffic light so that buses can run on a reliable schedule? Special Viva lanes? Electronic tickets that are based on time, so you don’t have to deal with transfers and stopovers and other silly crap? Service information displayed on screens at every stop?

Right now, this Viva thing not only sounds better than the whole bus thing, which is pretty bad right now, what with the possible half hour waits with buses not staggering themselves far apart enough for constant coverage and service, but it makes the subway system pretty useless too. With signal priority and dedicated lanes, it’s like a subway over ground with better information and ticket purchasing at stops.

We totally need Viva in Toronto. You York Region kids are bloody lucky.
