News from Ye Olde Weste Hille

Quite a bit has happened in the past week or so and quite a lot is going to happen in the weeks to come. I really, really want to get out of high school and into university tomorrow. I guess it’s part of the whole final year thing. It also has to do with being trapped in this monotonous place for three years already and that my patience is running at an all time low. Anyway, on to some interesting stuff.

So They’re Not That Incompetent

So after the bussing debacle on Friday, I received a reply from the trustee, Mr. Rutledge within minutes. He’d said that he will pass it on to the principal and he mentioned that although my concerns were valid, my tone was “over the top and not very helpful.” It was at this point that I realized that I was going to get screwed over because of this. So I panicked. I thought about often during the weekend. Come Monday, period 2, they called me down to the office.

It must have been a stroke of luck that Wilson left and we got a new VP. See, my entire complaint was based on the observations of when Wilson was in charge of bussing. Basically, if you don’t have a card, you’re screwed six ways to Tuesday until you can get another one.

The new VP, Mr. Lopes, was far more understanding. Was this because he wasn’t a complete ass like Wilson or was it because he was new here? I don’t know, but I noticed that throughout the discussion he asked me to do a few things like talk to my parents or get back to the trustee, while also mentioning that if I didn’t, that was within my rights as well.

He was also more understanding towards the situation. While Wilson would have told us all to go bugger off, Lopes realized that this was an error and told me that there wouldn’t be any student who normally takes the bus that would get rejected. He even had temporary bus passes ready.

So I learned a few things. First, there is a vice principal in charge of buses. Second, make sure nothing you say will come back and bite you in the ass later. Third, Lopes was the staff sponsor at the Christian Fellowship at his previous school. Hmmm…

It is a Time to Pray

SYATP poster

There’s a week left before FOCS starts meeting again. I made these pretty posters to promote the event. Hopefully, they’ll get approved by the administration. Perhaps the fact that Lopes was the sponsor for whatever school’s Christian fellowship will help. Anyhow, we still have a crapload of stuff to do before SYATP, like announcements, posters, talking to staff, etc. Please pray for us.

We Need OAC Power

It’s been two years since the axe-ing of the fifth year. I understand why they would. I mean, knowing that I still have a year to go is bad enough. If I were to have another year to go through, I would have to kill myself.

However, the lack of that familiar year has left us in a bit of a slump. I’ve mentioned it before, but our school really sucks without them OACs around. We won robotics on our first try with the OACs. After that, it just fell apart.

But the biggest thing is the band. When we got there in Grade 9, we sat in awe at the first concert band rehersal as the rest of the concert band flew through Prairiesong. After our first rehersal as Grade 12s, we kinda got through a boring piece and totally sucked at Grease.

If I were into worshipping my ancestors, I would be calling upon the spirits of the OACs and asking for their mighty powers right about now. But I’m not. So I guess we’ll have to go about that differently.

You’ve Already Learned Two Ways!!

Sadly, my teachers are not as interesting a bunch as last year. I mean, this year I have Voves, while really nice and teaching really well, is not the epitome of interesting. There’s also De Guzman, who is like any other young teacher, being cool and telling us how badly we’ll be screwed in university.

And then there’s Nguyen. He teaches physics. You know, boring stuff like vectors and lenses, drawing arrows and putting units in calculations. That physics. It would have been unbearable, except that his accent and fob English is enough to keep us all entertained for seventy minutes.

Since physics is his domain of mastery and not English, he manages to impart little golden nuggets of physics wisdom upon us that will stay in the depths of our hearts for many years to come, such as:

“Don’t learn two ways! Two ways will confuse you! If you want to use two ways, I will show you!”
- Referring to using only cosine for x and sine for y in vectors.

“They do not meet! If vector a goes there and vector b goes there they will not meet! If you go down Morningside and I go down Lawrence we can not meet! If I go to Lawrence and you go to Lawrence then, we can have a beer! But Morningside Lawrence? No!”
- Referring to vectors, that the tip must touch the tail of the next vector in order to add them together.

The downside though is that you really can’t be too sure that what he asks for on a test is what he wants on a test.

dude, i’ve done something like that, though it was more like cursing profusely within 3 meters of a teacher, waaay back in grade… 7 or 8. that and lighting a desk on fire at school. that’s similar to writing an angry letter… right? oh the antics of youth…

There’s a teacher who just got back from teaching in England for a year, and people who have her told me that she said that in England, it is completely normal behaviour for students to be starting fires in class.
