The Art of Buffet Eating
Eating at buffets is always fun. There is an endless amount of food and quite a nice amount of combination and variety, even at the smallest. There are also those unique things that each place tries to do differently to set themselves apart. And who can forget the social setting? The friendly competition, measured in plates, is always nice. Buffets are a wonderful place to have a nice little social gathering.
This Thursday, the Prefects had their yearly Prefect social at Super Buffet, on Markham and Ellesmere. It was a brilliant idea by our current executive, since the usual social consists of pizza after school. Pizza’s no good, since it is the default method of payment for our services. Help out on Photo Day? Here’s some pizza.
The great thing about being Chinese at a Chinese buffet is that you know what to skip and can skip becuase you have them at home any time. Things like char siu and bok choy are not worth the price of the buffet. However, grabbing all the sushi you can is a good idea. I don’t go for dim sum as much as I used to (with my family) so grab a few siu mai and deep fried squid things.
The thing that Super Buffet had that was interesting was their open wok thing. Basically, they have all sorts of uncooked meats and vegetables. You’d grab some of those and some noodles. You’d choose a sauce and bring it up to them. They’ll cook it and fry it and MSG it. Quite tasty. I think I should have gone for a few more of those, to try out the different sauces. I had teriyaki, but I was thinking about trying some Thai or Szechuan.
It was also interesting to observe how my friends who weren’t Asian react to some of the stuff. Things like char siu are super amazing to them. They would load up on fried noodles and bok choy and I would cry on the inside because the total worth of that plate of food was about three dollars. And it was fun seeing them eat squid or mussels for the first time.
In the end it was quite enjoyable. And I beat everyone else at my table with a respectable approximation of five plates. Quite enjoyable.
