The basic premise that the human attention span is shortening has never been argued very well. What evidence supports this. The cliche is to say that the "MTV cut cut cut" style shows that we are impatient with things. I disagree with this. If anything it shows that our minds are now capable of ingesting images and sounds more quickly than ever. Our media is definitely more complex than ever before and therefore so must our minds be more complex as creators and audiences.

Technology is easy to blame for things, but you are right that it is a tool. At the same time is a very different kind of tool than we have ever had before. It is an interface. As the ancient saying goes: "Don't shoot the messenger!" Yet everyone does! If you have ever hit your monitor while upset with the computer, you have made the same mistake. Its a logical error! But everyone, myself included has made this error. But why!? We are shooting the massager. By blaming the interface instead of the content we are missing the point and the issue. The next time you get mad at your computer, dump a cup of apple juice on the processor. That will show that stupid computer who is boss... While that might be closer to the truth it is still missing the point.

There are people doing these things. It always comes back to people. Books received a similar treatment when they became the common interface. So did radio, records and television.

One thing that is true is that technology does have the ability to make our lives more difficult instead of easier. How could this have happened?

This discussion has inspired me to write more about this topic. You think I should try a blog that addresses this as the main theme? Is it to heavy for people?

Great blog. Its great reading all of your posts.

srsly? y u haits graipfrut? i like it. it's like an orange with lemon tendencies, and personality. personality!

generations of people have been blaming younger generations for whatever <i>they</i>'re up to these days. also when one person has a good idea (facebook?), like twenty will come up with stupid ideas to 'enhance' that pretty awesome one (applications? i don't have fb). it's because they know most of us would rather be lazy, and there's a market for fluffy effortless stuff! we suck for blaming things with potential for not being easy enough, so we make some surfacy things to keep us occupied. it's a delicious downward spiral. like a grapefruit, if you cut it weird. i don't reeeally know what i'm saying.

I read your stuffs. I don't have much time for a reply so I'll just say that I see your point and it seems sound to me. Thus, I agree.
