Winter 09 anime impressions: Late edition

Some thoughts on the last few shows I can bear to take a look at.

Munto TV

Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai has a ridiculously long name in Japanese which is not any better in English: The World Reflected in the Eyes of a Girl Looking Up at the Heavens. So far, it’s not very gripping. So far, we have some generic magical kingdom in conflict over some generic magical resource and the key to saving everyone is a generic special girl. The worst thing about this show is that KyoAni could have been working on something that people actually wanted instead of this.

White Album

I’m a bit late to the party, but I figured I’d might as well have a look. There doesn’t seem to be anything obnoxiously bad. The text reminded me of ef, although it wasn’t as pervasive as I thought it would be. The conversations tended to ramble on and weren’t very interesting, but everything else seemed kind of realistic. The setting makes it feel like RideBack, but without anything cool happening.

Asu no Yoichi

I saw about half of this when my housemate was watching it while I was trying to procrastinate. Basically, HA HA HA NO. And based on this test of my ability to judge shows without watching them, I’m pretty sure I won’t enjoy Akikan and Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo either.

Dubya

Tomorrow, we’ll see a new President for the United States inaugurated and we’ll see the end of George W. Bush’s presidency. I thought that I should take this opportunity to express my thoughts on his term as president, seeing as how I’ve only mentioned him in passing on my blog. Where should I begin?

How about intellect? No, I’m not going to go for the “lolol bush is dumb”, since I honestly don’t think that’s the case, as much as we’d like for it to be true. He’s no mastermind, but he certainly knew what he was doing. It’s certainly easier for him to get away with crap under the guise of his alleged stupidity. It was easier for him to convince people that he was just a regular guy. He essentially made it bad to be an intellectual. And in office, he continued that war by ignoring and working against the scientific community.

How about civil rights? From the Patriot Act to the domestic spying program to the suspension of habeas corpus for those under suspicion of terrorism, the Bush Administration has seen a number of restrictions on civil rights in the States, both through legislation and illegally. You didn’t think warrant-less wiretapping was legal did you? I don’t care if it was for the security of the nation. Democratic nations have a little something called Rule of Law and that rule should never be compromised for any reason.

How about economics? Remember how Bill Clinton left office with a surplus? Bush decided that would justify some massive tax cuts. Not too long after that, there was 9/11 and a recession, and a bit later, a war to fight. And there was no more surplus to act as a safety net, leading to some fairly large deficits. And let’s not forget massive deregulation of the banks that have landed us in our current financial pile of crap.

How about foreign policy? It’s amazing how quick it took for Bush to squander all of the goodwill that the world had for America just after 9/11. Starting an ethereal war against terror, invading Iraq even though there was no reason to and lying about it, and deliberately antagonizing enemies are all the mistakes that Bush made while he was trying to impress the nation with his bravado. Because of his actions, the world is a much more dangerous place.

How about religion? Somehow, Christianity in America transmogrified into some sort of political entity and an extension of the Republican party over the last decade because of Bush. Seeing my religion used as a political tool that’s used by politicians that I don’t agree with is not something that makes me happy. Much has been made about the fact that Bush is a devout Christian and Christians seem ridiculously quick to forgive him of his faults because of it.

Based on his actions, I find it incredible that any Christian can consider him a shining example of our faith. If he is a Christian, he’s done a poor job of showing that he is one. Sure, he might earnestly appeal to God in his speeches and he might pray for the nation. However, I don’t think that a Christian would subvert Rule of Law, lie to the public, or politicize their faith. This doesn’t really indicate whether a person is saved or not, but it gives insight to their character, and I would find it troubling if someone with poor character were going around calling themselves a follower of Christ.

Ultimately, Bush’s legacy will be overshadowed by all of these problems. He acted against the interests of the nation, so he was a bad president. He knowingly lied and subverted the law, so I’d even say he was a bad person. Unless they address each of these huge problems that he’s wrought, I will be very skeptical of anyone who claims that Bush was good measured against any metric, and I’ll be questioning their judgement pretty hard.

Winter 09 anime impressions: Week 2

100% fewer sequels this week, 100% more comparing shows with expectation.

Kurokami: The Animation

The only information I went into Kurokami with was that the main character was not in high school and was a game programmer and that at some point, there would be a violent depiction of a girl getting hit by a truck. Unfortunately, the former did not come true. However, the fight sequence was very well animated and the violence in this episode is fairly brutal. Right now, that’s all it has going for it, because the plot details do not seem intriguing at all.

RideBack

RideBack is about motorcycle-mechs and civil rights. Right now, the plot is an unknown to me, but my biggest fear was with the CG. Thankfully, the episode was really well animated, and the CG sequences (the OP and the “chase” in the second half) turned out to be really, really cool. The main character seems interesting, with her affinity with the robot and whatever ambitions or motivations she might be harbouring. I’m looking forward to this one.

This week’s old animu: ARIA the ANIMATION

I avoided Aria for a while since it looked boring. I mean, I had a stack full of other, definitely more interesting shows. And I’m quite glad that I did hold off on Aria until the school term. Aria is a lot like Sketchbook in that I can’t really sustain long periods watching just that one show. It’s a show that I feel I can take my time with.

But did Aria turn out to be boring? No, it did not. Again like Sketchbook, it turned out to be a very slow-paced slice-of-life show with a smattering of comedy. The characters were all lovable and each episode gave you a great feeling after you finish it. In fact, I felt that Aria did each of these things better than Sketchbook did, which made it feel a lot more interesting to watch.

Aria, like other slice of life shows, makes the characters and the world feel very familiar. What sets Aria apart is that it doesn’t focus on girls in high school. Aria is about gondoliers on Mars in the future. This is what’s great about Aria; it makes space gondoliers feel familiar and relevant. I look forward to continuing to learn about being happy from space gondoliers in ARIA the NATURAL.

Winter 09 anime impressions: Week 1

In which I give my impressions on shows that everyone’s already talked about for the past week.

Maria+Holic

Maria+Holic doesn’t fall in my target radius for stuff I’m really interested in. The main characters are a closet lesbian who falls for a guy who’s crossdressing for reasons that haven’t been made apparent yet. But, I really like SHAFT, so I decided to have a look at at least one episode. The show is still awkward to watch, but the trap character is a lot funnier than I expected him to be. We’ll see how the rest of this goes.

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou

One of a billion sequels this season, this one is for a show that most people didn’t follow from last summer. This second season starts with the advantage of having the characters already gone through some development. This is a really character driven show and the first episode gives us a Natsume and Nyanko that are comfortable in their relationship already and who know how to react when problems show up. It’s a nice watch that’s pretty much only for those of us who liked the first season.

Minami-ke Okaeri

I really didn’t like Okawari and I was unimpressed upon learning that asread would be doing Okaeri. But, it looks like they’ve listened to a lot of the criticism of Okawari. For one thing, the writing and direction is a lot closer to that of the first season. There’s no constant barrage of Mako-chan, there’s no annoying original character, and the glimpse of the Minami brothers in the OP gives everyone hope. On the downside, it looks like the animation quality took a hit. I guess it’d be too much to ask for them not to screw anything up.
