Softeng 2011 downs Anime North

So I decided last minute to come back to Toronto this morning for Anime North with some other Softies and to make sure they didn’t die while travelling through Toronto (they’re not from Toronto). All in all it was a nice time and I managed to score some phat lewts, including a VG Cats poster signed by Scott Ramsoomair, a rat-flail t-shirt, and the first Penny Arcade book, Attack of the Bacon Robots.

So tonight’s CCF was speaker night. The speaker was a youth pastor who also worked with the gay community. Basically, his talk was a walk through his life and how God had worked through it. I’m not going to go through it. Rather, I’ll talk about interesting things that surrounded the speaker.

First of all, he mentioned he was at an Ambassadors for Christ conference this week, which of course meant TC, which we all knew. Secondly, after the program, we were hanging out and I was talking about WoW with one of my friends.

I was explaining how everyone’s favourite spell, Fear, worked and unloading my DoTs upon Feared targets. The speaker happens to overhear this and he’s like, “that sounds like my kinda language.”

It turns out he was a WoW player for a while until he took two jobs, which took up all of his time, since finding groups and running instances was becoming time consuming. He was explaining that he was a priest and that his wife was a warrior. He then asked us if we were familiar with Penny Arcade.

“!!!”

Turns out he’s on Dark Iron and he’s in Annarchy. So I told him I was also part of the PAA and that I was in Exuberance. Then we talked about the fact that I was a warlock and that I was easy mode or something to that effect.

But just, wow. That’s just amazing. I just met this youth pastor, who was speaking to CCF, who was a priest in Annarchy. Small world.

I’d just read on Ars Technica that at PAX, someone asked Gabe and Tycho whether they were going to get the PS3 at launch, to which Gabe responded:

We’ve already talked about it, there’s no chance we’re buying a PS3 at launch. That’s Grade-A bullshit.

And then there was applause and cheering from the crowd.

I guess Sony won’t be getting in on the hardcore gamer segment of the market.
